Reflections Over the Past Year
By Jeanie Embry, President
ABDWC of McCracken Co.
The Alben Barkley Democratic Woman’s Club of McCracken County has been preparing for battle over the past year by holding membership drives, hosting fundraising events, and participating in letter-writing campaigns. January and February brought us icy weather conditions that hindered our ability to assemble, however we quickly thawed out. Fueled by our raw passion and determination to ‘Ditch Mitch’, we seized on opportunities to hold membership drives; first at the McCracken County Democrats signature Alben Barkley Dinner last Fall, and then ‘Derby Day’ event in May as well as at our ‘Meet & Greet’ fundraiser event earlier this Spring. As a result of these endeavors, we’re extremely happy to announce that our club more than doubled its membership over the past year, with increase from 22 members in 2013 to 50 members in 2014! We’re also excited to announce that through our fundraising efforts, our club disbursed roughly $3,000 dollars to Democrat candidates who’re running for elected offices in McCracken County ranging from PVA to U.S. Senate!
Two of our newest ‘under age 40’ members, Brandi Harless and Sarah Stewart Holland, graduated Emerge KY class this year; accolades to Brandi and Sarah! We look forward to working for their respective campaigns in the near future! Member Nancy Bock is running for re-election as PVA and has a Republican opponent. Member Julie Griggs secured the Democratic nomination for McCracken County Clerk after a hard-fought primary; Julie is also facing a Republican opponent in the general election. Member Carol Gault is running for re-election as Paducah City Commissioner. We are so proud of our club’s brave, valiant, audacious women!
The Alben Barkley Democratic Woman’s Club recognized Alison Lundergan Grimes as honorary member of our club and we presented her with a club T-shirt and check for $1,500 during McCracken County Democrats Alben Barkley Dinner on Thursday evening leading up to Fancy Farm picnic. We enjoyed connecting with old friends and making new friends at the events leading up to Fancy Farm. Some of our members were captured in footage taken by out-of-town media holding up home made signs during the Fancy Farm political speeches where Gimes reigned supreme over her opponent. We admire Grimes’s courage for stepping up to challenge the status quo and we look forward to working with her as our next U.S. Senator!!
People living in rural areas of our state, like Western KY, are often ill-served and left in the dark about the ramifications resulting from votes and actions of their elected officials. Our members have had some great successes this year in getting their letters-to-the-editors published in various print and online media outlets. The annual Labor Day Parade in Paducah gave our Democrats the opportunity to shine.. and shine we did! Collectively our members have been busily supporting the entire slate of Democrat candidates by volunteering to make phone calls and canvassing door-door. Sheer determination and relentless perseverance of Kentucky’s Democratic Women will turn Kentucky Blue on November 4th!
